New Jersey Municipal Alliance Program

The Governors Council on Drug & Alcohol Abuse was established in 1989. It is an independant coordinating, planning, research and review body regarding all aspects of alcoholism and drug abuse in the State of New Jersey.

Funding for the Alliance Program is provided by the Governor's Council through Drug Enforcement Demand Reduction Fines. These fines are collected from persons convicted of drug offenses. The alliances are established in 499 of New Jerseys' 567 Municipalities. Bergen County has 63 participating towns.

The alliances are made up of volunteers. The purpose of the alliances are to coordinate and conduct alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention activities to benefit the community. These activities are based on an extensive needs assessment process and identification of priorities.

Based on their findings, Municipal Alliances submit a plan to the Bergen County Alliance, specifically outlining their alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs for the upcoming year. These plans are reviewed by the Bergen County Alliance and the Governors Council on Drug & Alcohol Abuse for approval for funding.
