Borough of Waldwick Email Notification Program


In 1996 The Bergen Record produced a news article on The Waldwick Email Notification Program. The program notifies residents by email of any events that are occurring in the Borough. More notably, during a rash of burglaries the Police Department was able to alert residents to suspect vehicles, and the time of day the burglaries were occurring. As of January 1, 2003 over 2500 residents are participating in the program. Waldwick was believed to be the first in the nation with such a program, this type of program has now grown nationwide.

"Law enforcement agencies will increasingly rely on computers to disseminate important announcements as more Americans spurn television and radio in favor of the Internet. Early in July, United Water asked 750,000 residents of New Jersey's Bergen and Hudson Counties to boil drinking water and refrain from outdoor use of water until a major leak at the Oradell Reservoir was repaired. Those who were not tuned to television and radio stations did not receive the news immediately and water use surged that night. Waldwick Detective Sgt. Kevin Smith is directing his police department's program to contact residents through alternative channels such as e-mail. Sgt. Smith said e-mail, which takes him less than five minutes to use, is particularly effective if key people are contacted who will subsequently spread the alarm, during the day most employees have email at work. According to the Internet research firm Jupiter Communications, 37 percent of American households are now on-line."
